Sheet Metal Punch Tooling

design and purchasing help for machining and sheetmetal fabrication Shown (left) are various punch tools used in our CNC punch presses to make the shaped cut-outs in your finished sheet metal parts. In the picture you can see two square punch bodies, round die, square die, and two different sized holders.
The tooling above is manufactured by Mate Precision Tooling. Amada and Wilson Tool are other popular brands available also.

When do tooling charges apply?

Most jobs do not require special tooling purchases because established sheet metal fabricators have large varieties of tooling on hand for projects.  If your part requires a special shape cut-out or a special formed feature that existing tooling cannot efficiently achieve, then tooling charges probably apply.

Types of Tooling Charges

Typically tooling charges for precision sheet metal are for punch press tooling which might be but are not limited to special shape cut-outs (punch press tooling), forming tools such as special size louver tools, lancing tools, inscription tools, embossing tools, countersink chips and card guide tools.   There are also instances where press brake tooling and welding fixtures are charged.  These tools are both purchased or can sometimes be fabricated in-house.
